What You Put on Your Plate Without Knowing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-22ef229d\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>A story that begins in a laboratory... and ends in your pantry<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The history of GMOs didn't begin in a field, but in a laboratory. In 1973, biochemists Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer achieved the first gene transfer between two living organisms\u2014a technical feat that opened the door to manipulating life. Two decades later, in 1994, the Flavr Savr tomato became the first genetically modified food marketed in the United States. Its promise? To ripen without softening, withstand transport, and stay \u00abperfect\u00bb on store shelves for longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What then seemed like a scientific curiosity quickly became a multi-billion dollar industry. In the space of 30 years, GM crops have gone from 1.7 million hectares to over 190 million hectares worldwide. Canada is among the top five global producers, with millions of hectares dedicated to genetically modified canola, soybeans, and corn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this meteoric expansion has occurred in near-total opacity for the consumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-69480205\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>What exactly is a GMO?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A genetically modified organism is a living being\u2014plant, animal, or microorganism\u2014whose genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. Unlike traditional breeding practiced by farmers for millennia, which crosses related varieties to favor certain traits, transgenesis directly inserts genes from a completely different species into an organism's DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concretely, this means that a gene from a bacterium can end up in a corn plant, making it resistant to certain insects. Or that a gene from a fish can be inserted into a tomato to improve its frost resistance. This crossing of natural barriers between species is precisely what distinguishes GMOs from conventional plant breeding \u2013 and what raises so many questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common modifications aim for two main objectives: to make crops tolerant to herbicides (particularly glyphosate, marketed under the name Roundup) and to confer insect resistance by incorporating a gene from the bacterium&nbsp;<em>Bacillus thuringiensis<\/em>&nbsp;(Bt), which produces an insecticidal toxin directly in the plant's tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-da288ee9\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong><strong>The glyphosate problem: the invisible companion of GMOs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It's impossible to talk about GMOs without talking about Monsanto \u2014 now owned by Bayer \u2014 the agrochemical giant that developed Roundup and GMO seeds designed to resist it. The business model is frighteningly simple: sell farmers genetically modified seeds that are glyphosate-tolerant, and then sell them the accompanying herbicide. A closed, extremely lucrative system that has transformed global agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The principle? The entire field is sprayed with Roundup, and only the GM crop survives. Everything else dies. The result? Global use of glyphosate has increased 15-fold since the introduction of GM crops. In Canada, glyphosate is detected in a significant proportion of analyzed food samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization, classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen (Group 2A). This classification triggered a wave of lawsuits in the United States, several of which resulted in verdicts of hundreds of millions of dollars in favor of plaintiffs with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Monsanto\/Bayer has since agreed to pay over $10 billion in settlements, a figure that speaks volumes about the severity of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But from a naturopathic perspective, what concerns us just as much is the impact of glyphosate on the biological environment\u2014and more particularly on the gut microbiome. Glyphosate works by inhibiting a metabolic pathway called the shikimate pathway, which is present in plants and bacteria. However, our beneficial gut bacteria possess this same pathway. This means that glyphosate residues in our food could silently affect our gut flora, inhibiting good bacteria like&nbsp;<em>Lactobacillus<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>Bifidobacterium<\/em>, while leaving room for less desirable strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you consider that 70 to 80 percent of our immune system is located in the gut, and that our microbiome influences our mood, energy levels, and metabolism, it becomes clear why this issue goes far beyond the simple \u00abpro- or anti-GMO\u00bb debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-a53bbae5\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Which foods are most affected?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-a7a9a013\"><h4 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>The four major GM crops<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast majority of commercially available GMOs are concentrated around four dominant crops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Soybeans<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 More than 90% of the soybeans grown in North America are genetically modified. Its derivatives are hidden everywhere: soy lecithin (a ubiquitous emulsifier), soybean oil, soy protein, non-organic tofu, soy milk, and countless processed foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Corn<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 About 90% of North American corn is genetically modified. It is found in the form of cornstarch, glucose syrup, dextrins, semolina, cereals, and animal feed\u2014which means it is indirectly present in conventional meat, eggs, and dairy products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image alignright uagb-block-e1c1fb3f wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-right\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vitacru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/OGM-sante.webp\" alt=\"gmo\" class=\"uag-image-12328\" width=\"363\" height=\"270\" title=\"GMO-health\" role=\"img\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Canola<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Canada is the world's leading producer of canola, and almost all of this production is genetically modified. Canola oil, which is ubiquitous in kitchens and restaurants, comes almost exclusively from GMO varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The potato<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 GMO varieties like the Innate potato have been approved in Canada. Although their market presence remains more limited, it illustrates the continued expansion of transgenesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And the tomato?<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Even though it was the very first genetically modified food commercialized in 1994 (the famous Flavr Savr), this variety was withdrawn from the market shortly after. Today, fresh tomatoes sold in grocery stores are generally not genetically modified. However, processed tomato products (sauces, ketchup, soups) may contain other ingredients derived from GMOs, such as corn starch or sugar beet sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-78599753\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>The domino effect in your grocery cart<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What makes the situation particularly complex is the domino effect. These four cultures give rise to hundreds of derived ingredients that are found in a multitude of processed products: tomato sauces, ketchup, soups, ice cream, chocolate, margarine, candies, baby food, canned goods, salad dressings, industrial bread, energy bars... the list is practically endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is estimated that&nbsp;<strong>60% of grocery products sold in Canada contain GMOs<\/strong>&nbsp;in one form or another. And the Canadian peculiarity? Unlike the European Union, Japan, Australia, and dozens of other countries,&nbsp;<strong>Canada does not require mandatory GMO labeling<\/strong>.The Canadian consumer is therefore navigating blindly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-c1035f8b\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>The Naturopathic Perspective: Why Our Bodies Aren't Designed for It<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In naturopathy, we start from a fundamental principle: the human body possesses innate intelligence. Over millennia of co-evolution, it has adapted to the foods that nature offers it. Each fruit, each vegetable, each seed in its original form contains a complex set of nutrients, enzymes, and cofactors that our body recognizes and knows how to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When proteins that have never existed in nature are introduced into the food chain \u2013 genetic combinations that no natural process could have produced \u2013 it raises a question that conventional medicine has not yet taken the time to truly explore: how do our digestive system, immune system, and biological makeup react to these novelties in the long term?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulatory approval processes rely on short-term studies and the concept of \u2019substantial equivalence\u00ab\u2014the idea that a GMO food is essentially identical to its natural counterpart. But \u00bbessentially identical\u00ab does not mean \u00bbidentical.\u00ab And in naturopathy, we know that it is often the subtleties\u2014a missing cofactor, a broken balance, a foreign molecule\u2014that make all the difference to the terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What particularly concerns us is the cumulative toxic load. It's not a single meal containing traces of GMOs and glyphosate that is the problem. It's daily exposure, meal after meal, year after year, in a context where our bodies already have to contend with pesticides, additives, air pollution, and chronic stress. Each additional factor overloads the emunctory organs \u2014 those elimination organs (liver, kidneys, intestines, skin, lungs) essential for maintaining our vitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-389c2f4b\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Foods Still Spared: Your Shopping Guide<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that many fruits and vegetables remain free of genetic modification. Knowing them means regaining control over your diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10 fruits considered non-GMO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lawyers<\/strong>&nbsp;Their culture has not undergone commercial genetic modifications. Bonus: their thick skin acts as a natural barrier against pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bananas<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Despite ongoing research into GMO varieties, the bananas available on the market come from traditional crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Papayas<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 GMO varieties exist (notably in Hawaii), but many traditional varieties remain available. Favor organic or Mexican-origin papayas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mangoes<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Mangos are not commercially genetically modified. Their natural varietal diversity remains intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pineapple<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Pineapple cultivation relies on traditional methods. A pink-fleshed GMO pineapple has been approved in the United States, but its presence remains marginal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Melons<\/strong>&nbsp;Watermelons, cantaloupes, and honeydew melons are grown from traditional seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kiwis<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Kiwi fruit has not been subject to GMO commercialization. Green and gold varieties are from conventional breeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grapefruits<\/strong>&nbsp;No genetically modified varieties are marketed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Raisins<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 The result of millennia of natural selection, grapes are not genetically modified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cherries<\/strong>&nbsp;Cherries are not subject to any commercial genetic modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10 Vegetables Generally Free of GMOs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Carrots<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 No GMO varieties commercially available. The different colors (orange, purple, yellow, white) are the result of natural selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beets<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Pay attention to the distinction: sugar beets are largely GMO, but garden beets (the whole ones you buy) generally are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Breadfruit<\/strong>&nbsp;This ancient root vegetable has not undergone any genetic modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rabioles (turnips)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 Grown using traditional methods, turnips are always a safe bet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rutabagas<\/strong>&nbsp;This traditional Nordic vegetable remains GMO-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Onions<\/strong>&nbsp;No genetically modified onion varieties are commercially available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cream puff<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 All varieties (green, red, curly, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli) are the result of natural selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Leeks<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 This classic of Quebec cuisine has never been the subject of commercial transgenesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Celeris<\/strong>&nbsp;Grown using conventional methods, it is often among the vegetables with high pesticide residue content. Opt for organic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Potatoes<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 GMO varieties exist in Canada, but they represent only a marginal fraction of the market. Traditional varieties dominate, especially among local producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-d1535968\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Five concrete strategies to regain control<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look for organic certification.<\/strong>&nbsp;In Canada, organic certification prohibits the use of GMOs. Look for the \u00abOrganic Canada\u00bb logo\u2014it's currently the most reliable way to avoid them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Buy local and seasonal.<\/strong>&nbsp;Quebec's local producers rarely grow GMO varieties. Farmers' markets and organic food boxes are excellent options that also support our local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Read the labels critically.<\/strong>&nbsp;Any product containing non-organic soy, corn, or canola may come from GMO crops. Keywords to look for: soy lecithin, corn starch, high-fructose corn syrup, canola oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prioritize whole, unprocessed foods.<\/strong>&nbsp;The more processed a food is, the more likely it is to contain GMO derivatives. A diet centered on fresh vegetables, fruits, organic legumes, nuts, and whole grains naturally reduces your exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Support your microbiome and your emunctories.<\/strong>&nbsp;Since glyphosate residues associated with GMO crops can affect your gut flora, actively nourish your microbiome: fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, fermented milk, miso), prebiotic fibers, and targeted probiotics. Also, support your liver and kidneys\u2014your detoxification allies\u2014with a diet rich in greens, bitter herbs, and pure water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-13c8e287\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Beyond the Plate: A Matter of Informed Choice<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue of GMOs goes far beyond a mere technical debate. It is fundamentally a matter of transparency, the right to information, and freedom of choice. In a country where 60% of food products potentially contain GMOs without any mandatory labeling, every consumer deserves to have the tools to make choices aligned with their values and their vision of health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In naturopathy, we believe the body has a remarkable ability to regenerate, detoxify, and maintain its balance\u2014provided it's given the right tools.
