Probably a few months ago, as part of a routine check-up that no one questions. We don't wonder if the animal has parasites. We know it does, or that it could. And we act, regularly, as a preventative measure.

For our animals, it’s common sense. For ourselves, it has become taboo.

Yet, for almost all of human history, deworming was as naturally a part of the health calendar as the changing seasons. The Ebers Papyrus, written in Egypt around 1550 BCE, already describes herbal intestinal cleansing protocols. Hippocrates recommended regular purges. In India, Ayurveda has integrated seasonal cures with climate transitions for millennia, precisely at times when parasites are reputed to be more active. In China, the Huangdi Neijing has dealt with parasites and their relationship with organs for over two thousand years.

And the Bible, in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, establishes precise lists of forbidden foods—pork, shellfish, fish without fins—that correspond with disturbing accuracy to the vectors of parasitic transmission that modern parasitology documented centuries later. These dietary purity laws were not arbitrary. Viewed from this perspective, they constituted an ancient form of parasitic hygiene that was truly effective.

What all these traditions share is a fundamental understanding: the human body can host organisms that feed on it, and health involves their regular elimination. Not with aggressive molecules. With plants, dietary changes, and attention to the body's internal environment.

What we lost in the 20th century, with the rise of the pharmaceutical model, is precisely this preventive and seasonal wisdom. We stopped seeing the body as a field to be maintained. We started seeing it as a machine to be repaired when it breaks down.

The major trend of deworming on social media invents nothing. It rediscovers something as old as medicine itself. And behind the trend, there is a biological reality that our ancestors understood long before us.

Who are they really?

The word «parasite» spontaneously brings to mind a worm visible to the naked eye, contracted after returning from a trip to Southeast Asia. This image is both too narrow and too reassuring. The parasitic world is extraordinarily diverse – and it concerns us all, here in Quebec, in our daily lives.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains an official list of over one hundred recognized, documented, and laboratory-identified human parasites. This list, publicly accessible through their DPDx program, covers organisms ranging from the microscopic to worms several meters long. These are not exotic curiosities reserved for tropical medicine physicians. These are biological realities that mainstream medicine formally recognizes—and that are almost never tested for in routine clinical practice.

They are grouped into three main families.

Helminths - worms

It's the best-known family, and it's more diverse than one might imagine.

Roundworms, or nematodes, include Ascaris lumbricoides, which can reach thirty centimeters in the small intestine and affect nearly one billion people worldwide. Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) are probably the most common in the West—they colonize the colon and rectum, and lay their eggs around the anus at night. Trichuris trichiura, the whipworm, anchors itself in the colon wall. Strongyloides stercoralis can reproduce inside the host without external reinfection, maintaining a silent chronic presence for decades.

Flatworms, or cestodes, include tapeworms. Beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata) and pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) can measure several meters long in the small intestine for years without causing any clear symptoms. They are transmitted through undercooked meat.

Flukes, or trematodes, are flatworms that target specific organs. The liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) settles in the bile ducts. The lung fluke (Paragonimus westermani) colonizes the lungs. Some flukes can live in the body for twenty to thirty years without showing clear symptoms.

Protozoa - The Invisible Ones

These are single-celled parasites invisible to the naked eye, and their impact is often underestimated precisely because they are not seen.

Giardia duodenalis, recognized by the CDC, is one of the most common parasitic infections in developed countries—including through well water, lakes, and recreational waterways. Entamoeba histolytica causes ulcers in the intestinal wall and can migrate to the liver. Blastocystis hominis is currently being studied for its role in chronic intestinal dysbiosis. And Toxoplasma gondii infects between 25 and 50% of the global population, remaining dormant in tissues for decades, most often without apparent symptoms.

Yeasts and fungi

Candida albicans is not a parasite in the strict sense, but in a weakened gut, its behavior approaches that of one: it takes advantage of an imbalance in the body's environment to proliferate excessively, producing toxins, perpetuating dysbiosis, and progressively weakening the entire intestinal barrier.

One point to remember

These organisms don't settle in just any environment. They seek a warm, acidic, oxygen-poor environment where elimination is slow. A clogged intestine, an overloaded liver, a depleted flora—that's exactly what they're looking for. And it's precisely for this reason that naturopathy always starts with the terrain, never solely with the invader.

The terrain that invites them

Imagine an aquarium. When the fish get sick, you don't treat the fish. You change the water. Because the real problem is never the fish — it's the water they live in.

Your body functions in exactly the same way. Parasites do not thrive in a healthy, well-maintained environment. They settle where conditions are favorable for them: a leaky gut, depleted flora, an overloaded liver, sluggish digestion. Before seeking to eliminate the invader, naturopathy always asks the same fundamental question: what made this water so welcoming?

The intestine: the first gateway

Your intestinal lining is a remarkably precise border. Laid flat, it would cover the surface of a tennis court—yet it's just one cell thick. As long as this border is intact, it allows nutrients to pass through while keeping undesirables out.

But this barrier can be compromised. An ultra-processed diet, chronic stress, repeated antibiotic use, lack of fiber, certain medications – all these factors weaken the junctions between the cells of the lining. This is called intestinal hyperpermeability, the famous leaky gut. When these junctions open up, unwanted fragments pass into the bloodstream: bacterial fragments, incomplete proteins, and parasites that find exactly the passage they were looking for in this permeability.

A slow transit further aggravates the situation. A sluggish colon is a hot, acidic, oxygen-poor environment where matter stagnates. Dr. Bernard Jensen, a pioneer in gut health, used to say that death begins in the colon — a striking phrase, but a solid principle: a congested gut becomes a source of internal toxicity that overflows into everything else.

Dysbiosis: When flora loses control

Your gut microbiome—those one hundred trillion microorganisms living in your digestive tract—is your first line of defense against invaders. A diverse and balanced flora occupies space, produces natural antimicrobial substances, and maintains intestinal pH in a zone hostile to parasites.

But when this flora becomes depleted, the balance shifts. Antibiotics, refined sugar, chronic stress, and a lack of fermentable fibers decimate the good bacteria. The space freed up is immediately colonized by opportunists—yeasts, pathogenic bacteria, and parasites, which finally find ground without resistance.

The liver: the overwhelmed filter

The liver is the body's main filter. Everything the intestines absorb passes through it before reaching the general circulation. When it functions well, it neutralizes toxins, transforms hormones, produces bile that acidifies the small intestine, and plays a natural antimicrobial role.

But a chronically overloaded liver — from processed foods, medications, heavy metals, alcohol, oxidative stress — produces lower quality bile in insufficient quantities. The small intestine loses its protective acidity. And in this stagnant and less well-defended environment, parasites take refuge.

Stress: The Silent Saboteur

Chronic stress keeps the adrenal glands in a constant state of alert, repeatedly releasing cortisol. When exposed to prolonged levels of cortisol, the gut’s immune system is suppressed, the mucosal lining is weakened, and the microbiome is disrupted. The local immune system—which accounts for about 70% of the body’s total immunity—loses its vigilance. And parasites that would have been neutralized in a healthy environment find the path clear.

This is why naturopathy never treats parasites as an isolated problem. To drive out the invader without repairing the terrain is like emptying the aquarium without changing the filter.

The body's signals

Your body never stays silent for long. It speaks, it signals, it insists. The problem is that we've learned to interpret its messages as the inevitable in modern life—Monday fatigue, evening bloating, nighttime itching we attribute to the heat. We normalize what should alert us.

With parasites, this phenomenon is particularly pronounced. Their symptoms are so common, so seemingly banal, that they go undiagnosed for years, with their true cause never being identified. And because each family of parasites targets different areas of the body, the signals vary from person to person in a confusing way.

Digestive signals

This is often where it all begins. Persistent bloating, unexplained alternating constipation and diarrhea, foul-smelling gas, abdominal cramps after meals, a feeling of incomplete digestion, the presence of mucus in the stool. These symptoms are classically attributed to irritable bowel syndrome or stress. But when they resist usual approaches and persist over time, the possibility of a parasitic cause deserves consideration.

Pinworms primarily manifest as intense anal itching at night. Giardia typically produces greasy, floating stools accompanied by significant bloating and profound digestive fatigue. Entamoeba histolytica causes lower abdominal cramps and sometimes blood in the stool.

Unexplained fatigue

Intestinal parasites divert a portion of absorbed nutrients to fuel their own metabolism. Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids involve this silent theft, creating subtle deficiencies that manifest as persistent fatigue, slow recovery after exertion, and reduced resilience to daily stress. When fatigue doesn't respond to sleep, supplements, or dietary changes, a parasitic infestation deserves consideration.

Brain fog and mood disorders

Certain parasites produce neurotoxins that directly affect the nervous system. *Toxoplasma gondii* encysts in brain tissue and has been associated in several studies with subtle changes in behavior and mood. More broadly, a dysbiotic and permeable gut produces less serotonin, compromises the gut-brain axis, and generates low-grade inflammation that manifests as diffuse anxiety, persistent brain fog, or irritability without apparent cause.

Skin and skin conditions

When the body's internal elimination pathways are overwhelmed, it seeks alternative outlets. The skin then becomes a default elimination organ. Recurring eczema, generalized itching with no identified dermatological cause, dull complexion, pronounced dark circles, and rashes that return despite local treatments: these manifestations can indicate a liver and colon that can no longer handle the toxic load on their own.

Uncontrollable food cravings

Intense cravings for sugar, bread, and refined starches may reflect the fact that certain organisms preferentially feed on glucose and influence hunger and craving signals via the microbiome and neurotransmitters. An imbalanced microbiome modulates our food preferences in a way that primarily serves its less welcome occupants.

An important principle

None of these signs, taken in isolation, allow us to conclude the presence of parasites. What their constellation tells us, especially when it persists despite efforts, is the story of a weakened terrain that can no longer maintain its balance on its own. And this is precisely where naturopathy intervenes: not to make a diagnosis, but to read what the terrain expresses and to restore the conditions for it to defend itself.

Diagnosis and its limitations

The first thing to say clearly: if you recognize yourself in the signs described in the previous section, consult a doctor. Only they are authorized to make a diagnosis, prescribe the appropriate tests, and determine if medical treatment is necessary. This is not a formality. It is a reality that naturopathy fully embraces: our role is not to diagnose or treat illness. It is to support the body's natural state, promote prevention, and assist the body in its natural cleansing processes. These two approaches are not mutually exclusive. They are complementary.

That said, it's useful to understand what available medical tests can find, and what they cannot find. Not to bypass medicine, but to better understand why working on your overall health remains relevant even in the absence of a positive result.

What Standardized Tests Measure

The gold standard test for detecting intestinal parasites is a stool examination to look for eggs and parasites. In practice, its sensitivity is estimated to be between 30% and 50%. This means that in one out of every two cases, a present parasite will not be detected. The reasons are simple: parasites lay eggs in cycles, not continuously. A sample taken between two laying cycles will test negative even if the host is indeed infected.

Furthermore, many parasites never pass through the stool. Tissue parasites like Toxoplasma gondii, Echinococcus, Trichinella, or migrating Strongyloides larvae will never be visible in a standard fecal examination. They are in the tissues, in the liver, in the lungs. No stool analysis will find them.

Blood serology tests exist that can detect antibodies against specific parasites. These tests are available and performed in specialized laboratories, but they are almost never requested routinely, unless there is a very specific clinical context, such as a return from travel with suggestive symptoms.

What that means in practice

A negative result does not mean the absence of parasites. It means that the tools used did not find what they were capable of searching for. This is an important nuance, which does not invalidate the value of these tests, but it suggests not stopping at a negative result when the clinical picture remains concerning.

Unlike approaches focused on symptom treatment, naturopathy emphasizes prevention. Cleansing your system is a natural, preventive strategy that makes sense for everyone, simply to maintain and optimize your health on a daily basis.

Consulting a doctor and taking care of your underlying health are not two opposing paths. They are two complementary actions in service of the same vitality.

The Natural Toolbox

Before there was a single pharmacy, plants were the pharmacy. For millennia, people on every continent observed what drove away worms, what cleansed the gut, what made the terrain inhospitable to undesirable organisms. This knowledge didn't come by chance. It came from generations of observation passed down over centuries.

What naturopathy does with this ancestral knowledge is combine it with our current understanding of the body's terrain. We don't try to declare war on parasites. We try to make their environment so inhospitable that they no longer have a reason to stay.

Foods that work for you

Garlic is probably the best-documented food antiparasitic in history. Its secret lies in a detail that few people know: you have to crush it and wait ten minutes before consuming it. It is this contact between the enzyme and its substrate that produces allicin, the sulfur compound with antiparasitic properties. A crushed clove on an empty stomach in the morning is a simple and powerful act.

Pumpkin seeds, rich in cucurbitacin, paralyze tapeworms and detach them from the intestinal wall. Papaya seeds have a long tradition of use against worms in Central and South America. Thyme and oregano, rich in thymol and carvacrol, gradually make the intestinal environment less welcoming for opportunistic organisms. Generously incorporated into daily cooking, they already do real work.

Plants of tradition

Hulda Clark, in her book *The Cure for All Diseases* (1995), based her protocol on three plants used in conjunction: black walnut hull (Juglans nigra), wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), and cloves. She emphasized this fundamental point: all three together, never one without the others. Each plant acts on a different stage of the parasitic cycle—adults, larvae, eggs—and only their combination interrupts the complete cycle.

Artemisinin, extracted from sweet wormwood, deserves special mention. Chinese researcher Tu Youyou isolated it by drawing on ancient medical texts and received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015 for this discovery. Wormwood had not waited for science to be effective. Science has caught up with it.

Vitacru Products

For those looking for a ready-made, artisanal, and organic formula, the Dye Kills Parasite combines the six key plants of traditional deworming into a single product: black walnut hull, wormwood, fresh garlic, cinnamon, thyme, and clove. It covers the different stages of the parasitic cycle in a synergistic formula refined by centuries of empirical use.

The Berberine Intrinsic is a particularly useful complementary ally when dysbiosis and candida accompany the condition. It creates an inhospitable environment in the gut for parasites, pathogenic bacteria, and excess yeasts, acting on several imbalances simultaneously.

The Saccharomyces boulardii plays a different but equally essential role. This therapeutic yeast supports the restoration of microbial balance during and after the cleansing protocol, to prevent the vacuum created from being occupied by new opportunists.

An important precaution

When parasites die in large numbers, they release toxins into the body. Temporary headaches, amplified fatigue, skin rashes: this is the Herxheimer reaction, a sign that the body is working. The key is gradualness—start gently, support the eliminatory organs in parallel, and listen to the body's rhythm rather than forcing it.

Order matters: open before you move

There's a mistake many people make when they discover natural deworming: they jump straight to the vermifuge plants without preparing the ground. And a few days later, they feel worse than before. Intense headaches, overwhelming fatigue, nausea. Discouraged, they stop everything, concluding that the approach doesn't work.

It's not the approach that's not working. It's the order that wasn't followed.

In naturopathy, we never mobilize without first opening the exit routes. Imagine stirring up the silt at the bottom of an aquarium without the filter being able to process it. The toxins are then freely suspended in the water, with nowhere to go. This is exactly what happens when you try to dislodge parasites in a body whose emunctories are congested.

The logical sequence is always the same: colon first, then liver, with kidneys and lymph supporting.

The colon: the unmissable starting point

First and foremost, the colon must be able to circulate. This is the minimum condition. Regular transit, daily bowel movements, a clean and functional intestinal lining: without this, anything we mobilize upstream has nowhere to go.

This is where the The Cleansing Drink It enters the game as the foundation of any serious protocol. Twice a day, at sunrise and sunset, this detoxifying fiber-based beverage acts like a small broom on the intestinal walls. It softens hardened residues that have adhered to the lining for years, stimulates peristalsis, alkalizes the system, and soothes irritated tissues. It is not a treatment for parasites. It is the preparation of the ground without which no deep cleansing can be done properly.

The liver: the filter that needs to last

Once the colon is moving, you can start supporting the liver. It's the organ that receives everything the intestines mobilize and release. If you ask it to process a heavy toxic load without preparing it, it quickly becomes overwhelmed. Milk thistle, with its silymarin, is the great liver protector of naturopathic tradition: it protects liver cells from toxic damage while stimulating their regeneration. Artichoke, dandelion, and burdock complete this support by promoting bile drainage and liver elimination.

The Kidneys and Lymph: Deep Cleaning

The kidneys filter what the liver has processed. Lymph transports cellular waste to the elimination organs. These two systems need to be supported in parallel, especially when the body is undergoing a more intensive cleansing effort. Horsetail, goldenrod, and dandelion Herbal tea support kidney filtration. Movement, especially bouncing on a mini-trampoline, is the most effective tool for activating lymphatic circulation.

A principle, not a recipe

This segment does not describe a protocol to be followed blindly. It describes a logic: the logic of the terrain first, then sequence, always with progression. Each person has a different level of load, a different elimination capacity, and organs that are more or less solicited. Naturopathic support allows you to read what your terrain is specifically expressing and to adapt the approach to your reality.

What doesn't change, regardless of the person: you open before you mobilize. Always.

Find an available spot

Parasite cleansing is not a fad. It's a return to something humanity has practiced for millennia, in different forms, on every continent, with remarkable consistency. What our ancestors did instinctively with the change of seasons, what the great medical traditions of the world have codified in their oldest texts, what modern parasitology confirms today in its own terms: a body that eliminates well is a body that functions better.

Pests aren’t the enemy. They’re a sign that your garden needs some attention. And that’s great news, because unlike many other things, your garden is in your hands.

Taking care of your body means choosing your foods with intention, incorporating traditional herbs into your daily routine, respecting the order of the emunctory organs, and supporting your liver and colon before asking your body to undergo a deeper cleansing process. It’s not an overnight revolution. It’s a series of consistent actions that build up and gradually change the quality of the water in the aquarium.

This blog has given you the basics. But understanding is one thing. Knowing exactly what to do, in what order, with what tools, and based on your specific situation is another step entirely. That’s exactly what we offer in our MasterClass The different detox tools in naturopathy : the body’s mechanisms, practical protocols, plants, routines, and precautions for taking care of your body independently and with confidence.

Your body hasn't stopped being intelligent. It's simply waiting for you to give it back what it needs.

References:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
