Today, science confirms what traditions already knew: light is essential for health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-d209afda\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Eight Months Without Sun: The Quebec Reality<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand why so many Quebecers are deficient in vitamin D, we must first understand how the body produces it. When the sun's UVB rays touch it directly, it transforms a form of cholesterol present in its cells, 7-dehydrocholesterol, into vitamin D. This is a natural and extremely efficient process. But it depends on one essential condition: the sun must be high enough in the sky for UVB rays to reach the Earth's surface without being filtered by the ozone layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers summarize this reality with a simple rule: if your shadow is longer than you are tall, vitamin D production becomes almost nil, no matter how much time you spend outdoors. This is the \u00abshadow rule,\u00bb popularized by Dr. Michael Holick, a biochemist at Boston University and a recognized expert on vitamin D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At our latitude of approximately 45 degrees north, this optimal window extends mainly from late April to late August, primarily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The rest of the year, the skin produces very little vitamin D. For nearly two-thirds of the year, our bodies are therefore deprived of their main natural source. Even in the summer, several factors reduce this ability. Sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can block up to 95% of vitamin D synthesis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dressing in clothes, tinted windows, and indoor work also limit UVB exposure. Darker skin, rich in melanin, also produces less vitamin D for the same exposure. And with age, this capacity significantly decreases: at 70 years old, one produces about four times less than at 20 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there is another rarely discussed problem. In Quebec, blood tests generally consider a concentration between 75 and 250 nmol\/L of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the form measured in the blood, to be \u00abnormal.\u00bb The threshold used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/o1\/fr\/plus\/5095-faire-la-lumiere-sur-le-niveau-de-vitamine-d-au-canada-lapproche-du-jour-le-plus-court-de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Statistics Canada<\/a> is even set at 50 nmol\/L, below which about one-third of Canadians fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, several researchers, including Dr. Holick, believe that these thresholds remain far from optimal levels. In some populations who traditionally live in the sun, such as the Maasai in Tanzania, natural concentrations are rather between 100 and 150 nmol\/L. It is therefore possible to be \u00abwithin the norm\u00bb on paper while remaining biologically deficient. This is called subclinical deficiency: a discreet deficiency, but sufficient to disrupt many bodily functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f5da9b94\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Vitamin D isn't really a vitamin<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here's something that changes everything once you understand it: Vitamin D is poorly named. It was called a \u00abvitamin\u00bb at the beginning of the 20th century, a time when all essential substances discovered in food were grouped under this term. But over time, a reality became apparent: vitamin D functions much more like a hormone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your body makes it itself from cholesterol and sunlight. The liver and kidneys then activate it in several steps, just like other hormones such as cortisol, testosterone, or estrogen. It circulates in the blood and binds to specialized receptors found in almost all human tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers have identified these receptors, known as VDRs (vitamin D receptors), in the brain, the immune system, the muscles, the intestines, the skin, and the reproductive organs. More than 2,000 genes respond to vitamin D, accounting for about 10 % of your genetic code. It\u2019s as if it were adjusting the settings of 2,000 biological switches all at once. When vitamin D is lacking, it\u2019s not just a single system that slows down\u2014the entire biological balance is disrupted. Fatigue, a weakened immune system, mood disorders, inflammation, and sleep disturbances then become much more common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient traditions already presented this link between light and vitality. In Ayurvedic medicine, the sun represents a source of prana, the vital energy. In Chinese medicine, it nourishes yang, the active energy of the body. The Bible itself evokes the sun as a source of direct healing: \u00abBut for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings,\u00bb wrote the prophet Malachi (Malachi 4:2), millennia before science measured UVB rays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nordic peoples, on the other hand, had developed the reflex of consuming cod liver oil to get through the long winters. They weren't talking about hormones yet, but they had understood that a life deprived of light profoundly weakened the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-6b7004ef\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">What she really does to your body<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, vitamin D was reduced to a matter of bones.
